FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do Lap-Band surgery results compare to those with the gastric bypass?
It has been reported by many surgeons that gastric bypass patients typically lose weight faster in the first year than Lap-Band patients, however, there are many LAP-BAND® patients who have also achieved weight loss comparable to that of gastric bypass patients. The compared weight loss over a longer period is basically the same.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Weight loss results will vary from patient to patient. The amount of weight you lose will depend on several variables. For example, the position and amount of band restriction will affect weight loss as does your level of commitment to your new lifestyle and healthy eating habits. It is very important to set achievable weight loss goals from the beginning. A weight loss of 2-3 pounds per week in the first year after the operation is possible, but one pound a week is more likely. A year or so after your surgery, the weekly weight loss is usually less than the 2-3 pounds per week, however, it will be a steady loss if you are committed to the aftercare program. It is important to remember that you should lose weight gradually because rapid weight loss creates a significant health risk and may lead to a number of additional problems. Your main goal is for your weight loss to prevent, improve, or resolve the health risks that are a result of severe obesity.
Is this procedure reversible?
The LAP-BAND® is not meant to be removed, however, it can be removed if necessary. If the band is removed, the stomach is, in most cases, able to return to its original shape. A patient must be warned that after LAP-BAND® removal, any weight lost will, most often, be regained.
How will my desire for food be impacted?
After LAP-BAND® surgery you will eat less and feel full because the size of your stomach has been reduced and time it takes food to get through the digestive system has been lengthened. Even after a small meal you will feel full. If you follow the nutrition guidelines when you choose your food and then chew it well, you should not feel hungry or deprived. Remember that the LAP-BAND® is a tool to help you change your eating habits. It is important to eat foods that are nutritionally rich and to avoid foods that contain too much sugar and fat. You may be advised to take vitamin supplements. If you take medications, your doctor will advise you on how to take them.
Eating out with friends?
It is advised that you order only a small amount of food, such as an appetizer and eat slowly so that you are able to finish at the same time as your friends.
What about drinking alcohol?
Because alcohol is high in calories, turns to sugar, and also breaks down vitamins, it is not recommended as a healthy food choice. However, an occasional glass of wine or other alcoholic beverage is not necessarily considered harmful.
Will my physical activities be limited after Lap-Band surgery?
After your LAP-BAND® surgery, it will be about a week before you will be able to return to work and 4 - 6 weeks before you can resume normal exercising. After that time your physical activities should not be affected in any way.
What about the access port that is placed underneath my skin?
The access port is placed under the skin in the abdominal wall. Once the incisions have healed, the access port should not cause discomfort or limit any physical exercise.
